Video: Space Shuttle Enterprise Last Flight – New York Flyby 27 April 2012
Space shuttle Enterprise, a prototype shuttle, flew for the last time carried atop a NASA 747 carrier plane from Washington to New York on Friday, Apr. 27. 2012 (scroll down for video and photos).
The flyover of New York City skyline represented a symbolic gesture of farewell. Many Americans have the opportunity to say goodbye to the shuttle which entered the legendary conquest of the outer space.
NASA’s “Enterprise – 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA)” pair flew at a quite low altitude over several landmarks of the New York City metropolitan area, including the Statue of Liberty and the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum. After completing the amazing flyby, the SCA landed Enterprise at John F. Kennedy International Airport.
Next, Enterprise is planned to be removed from the back of the 747 and loaded on a barge that will be transported by tugboat up the Hudson River to the Intrepid museum in June. Then the spacecraft will be picked up by crane and dropped on the flight deck of the Intrepid Museum, where it will be displayed to the public starting summer 2012 in a temporary climate-controlled pavilion. At the same time the Intrepid works on a permanent facility to showcase Enterprise.
