Saturn’s image was processed by specialists at the Cassini Imaging Central Laboratory for Operations (CICLOPS) of the Space Science Institute in Boulder, USA.

The above photograph was captured in September, when Cassini was on the dark side of Saturn. Saturn’s disk overlaps the Sun covering it completely, such that planet’s shadow is projected on the rings which are lit by solar radiation.
Apart from the exceptional view of Saturn, this stage of Cassini mission provided also the best opportunity to get detailed information about the atmosphere of the planet and its rings. Normally, such good data would have been difficult to obtain.
The last time Cassini had the opportunity to see the whole shape of Saturn was in 2006, when the probe caught in the background also the Earth. This time Earth’s image was blocked by the Saturn’s disk, instead there can be seen two of Saturn’s moons – Enceladus and Tethys – in the bottom left side of the picture (two whitish points, barely visible).
