Ground-breaking discovery: Superfood efficiency in fighting cancer, demonstrated for the first time
An unprecedented study first proves the effectiveness of the “super-foods” in battling prostate cancer.
During the research, men who had undergone surgery or radiotherapy received a capsule comprising essence of pomegranate, green tea, turmeric and broccoli.
After a 6 month study, researchers found that the level of PSA, a protein that indicates the presence of cancer, was 63% lower in the body of the men treated with this capsule than those who received placebo.
Although other laboratory tests and trials suggested that these foods rich in polyphenol show anti-cancer potential, the Britons’ research is the first to prove this effect among patients with prostate cancer compared with men who did not received this treatment.
Professor Robert Thomas, an oncologist at Bedford and Addenbrooke’s Hospitals in Cambridge, revealed the outcome of this research at the conference organized by the American Society of Clinical Ontology in Chicago.
Food containing polyphenols, substances found in plants, have been associated with a lower risk of suffering from chronic diseases such as dementia, arthritis, macular degeneration, heart disease and aging skin.

However, the research has shown that women who survived breast cancer but consumed fruits, vegetables, green tea and polyphenol-rich substances, showed a lower rate of cancer recurrence.
The anticancer power of the polyphenols stems from their antioxidant characteristics, thus protecting the DNA from oxidative alteration caused by carcinogens. In addition, polyphenols inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells.
“Our experience in terms of quality cancer care services as well as our collaboration with world-class scientists at Cambridge University has allowed us to make this discovery that promises to have a global impact. We hope our discovery will help millions of men around the world to fight prostate cancer,” said Professor Thomas.
The study did not identify any side effects in men who were treated with this food supplement. As a result of lower PSA levels recorded in their body, fewer men were forced to resort to toxic therapies at the end of the study, announced to researchers.
“A healthy diet and lifestyle is the basic means to prevent cancer, but now men may use a dietary supplement whose effectiveness has been demonstrated,” concluded Professor Thomas.
